Headstrong by Dave Asprey
By now you have probably heard of the “butter in your coffee craze”. Ever wonder where that came from? Dave Asprey, the author of this book had more than just a little bit to do with that. He has written other books about dieting and health, but currently this is his masterpiece. The book describes the importance of the mitochondria/power plants in your cells. His goal is to educate that reader on the importance of caring for your mitochondria to improve one’s health. His theory is that healthy mitochondria make healthy people. He is certainly on to something here. While the book takes every opportunity to promote his line of supplements, there are also many other healthy tips provided which don’t involve his supplements. I highly recommend reading this book. Even if you do not agree with the research he has compiled, you will for sure be scratching your head about all of the intricacies of the human body and human performance involving the mitochondria in our cells.

From ethics, to taste, to nutrition, this book addresses these and much more as it visits producers of unique food all around the world. You will find answers to questions such as; why is a carrot grown in healthy soil better than one grown in poor conditions? If you want to take your understanding of food and nutrition to the next level, this is a great read.

The Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan
There is a reason that Michael Pollan and this book has won multiple notorious awards. Its subject is food and how we get that food. The last time I checked, everyone still had to eat to stay alive, but all it takes is a simple swipe of a credit card to get whatever edible item you want. People have to make decisions on what to eat to everyday. This is the dilemma that he addresses. What should we be eating? Not what is the cheapest thing to eat or the easiest? What should we eat? Being animals with such a huge smorgasbord of opportunity for meals, most of us make the wrong decision most of the time. As you follow his travels and encounters with various farmers, hunters and gathers he reminds us that chicken isn’t just something that exists in plastic wrap and Styrofoam before you eat it.
